Breakbulk Shipping

Breakbulk shipping provides an alternative when cargo cannot be loaded safely or practically into a standard shipping container. Large machinery, industrial equipment, steelwork, boats and other out-of-gauge consignments may be lifted or rolled aboard as separate units.

Breakbulk shipping provides an alternative when cargo cannot be loaded safely or practically into a standard shipping container. Large machinery, industrial equipment, steelwork, boats and other out-of-gauge consignments may be lifted or rolled aboard as separate units. Rapid Logistics can review the cargo details and help identify a suitable route from the UK, subject to carrier acceptance and available vessel space.

A workable plan begins with accurate information. Send the dimensions, gross weight, lifting points, centre of gravity, photographs and packing details for every item. These details allow the carrier and terminal to assess how the cargo can be received, stored, lifted, secured and discharged. Prices are quote-only because handling requirements, port facilities and vessel availability differ for every movement.

When breakbulk may be suitable

Breakbulk can be considered for cargo that exceeds the internal dimensions, door opening or safe payload of a standard container. It may also suit equipment that must remain assembled, cargo with unusual lifting requirements, or a shipment that needs direct access for cranes and terminal handling equipment.

Typical enquiries include construction equipment, agricultural machinery, generators, tanks, boats, fabricated structures and project cargo. Acceptance is never automatic. The shipping line, ports and handling contractors must confirm that the cargo, lifting plan and route are suitable before a booking is made.

Information required for a quotation

Provide the collection address, destination, commodity description and whether the cargo is operational. We also need the exact length, width, height and weight of each shipping unit. State whether lifting eyes, certified slings, cradles or other handling points are available, and include clear photographs from several angles.

If dangerous goods, batteries, fuel, oils or other controlled materials are present, declare them at the start. Additional documents, preparation or restrictions may apply. Undeclared cargo can be rejected and may create serious safety and customs problems.

Collection, ports and handling

The UK collection stage may require a low-loader, step-frame trailer, escort arrangements, permits or a crane. Port selection depends on the cargo dimensions, destination, vessel service and the equipment available at each terminal. We will review these elements rather than assume that the nearest port is the right departure point.

At the port, cargo may be lifted by shore crane or vessel gear, transferred using mafi equipment, or handled through another agreed method. The carrier determines the final loading and securing arrangement. Current schedules and handling costs must be confirmed for the actual shipment.

Packing and securing

Export packing should protect vulnerable surfaces and components while leaving safe lifting and lashing points accessible. Loose parts should be removed or secured, openings protected and fluids managed in accordance with carrier instructions. Timber packaging used for international trade may need to comply with ISPM 15 requirements.

A marine surveyor or specialist packing contractor may be appropriate for high-value, complex or unusually heavy cargo. Cargo insurance should also be considered using the correct description and declared value. See our marine insurance information for the details usually required.

Customs and shipping documents

Commercial invoices, packing lists, ownership evidence and export declarations may be needed. The destination can impose import permits, inspections, taxes or restrictions that are separate from the UK shipping arrangement. The consignee should confirm local requirements before the cargo leaves the UK.

Rapid Logistics can coordinate freight and documentation elements included in an agreed quotation. Any destination charges, storage, inspections, demurrage or special handling should be identified where possible, but remain subject to the carrier, terminal and authorities.

Request a breakbulk quote

Use the quotation form with complete measurements, weights and photographs. If the cargo can fit alternative equipment, we can also compare container shipping, RoRo vehicle shipping or specialist flat-rack options. No price or sailing is confirmed until the carrier has reviewed the shipment and issued current terms.
