Personal effects shipping is used for clothing, books, household items and other belongings sent during a move, study placement, work assignment or return home. Depending on the volume, timing and destination, the shipment may travel by air freight, LCL groupage or a dedicated container.

Rapid Logistics can review your packed inventory and request a current quotation. Rates depend on package dimensions, gross weight, collection location, destination and customs arrangements. All prices are quote-only, and delivery times remain estimates until the carrier confirms a booking.

Choose the transport method

Air freight may suit urgent or smaller consignments. Airlines calculate chargeable weight using the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so large lightweight boxes can cost more than expected. Airline acceptance, flight space and destination handling must be checked for the packed shipment.

LCL groupage can suit belongings that do not fill a container, while a full container may suit a larger household move or a load combined with a vehicle. Compare the complete origin and destination charges as well as the main freight cost.

Prepare an itemised inventory

List the contents of every carton or case in clear everyday language. Number the packages and make the labels correspond with the inventory. Include dimensions, gross weight and an appropriate value for customs and insurance purposes.

Descriptions such as “personal items” or “miscellaneous” may be insufficient. Customs authorities can request evidence of ownership, residence, transfer of residence or intended use. The consignee should confirm the destination's reliefs, duties and required forms before departure.

Packing personal belongings

Use strong cartons or export cases and do not exceed a manageable package weight. Wrap fragile items individually, fill voids and reinforce seams. Suitcases designed for passenger travel may not provide enough protection for repeated freight handling.

Wooden crates and pallets may require ISPM 15-compliant treatment. Furniture should be protected against rubbing and moisture, with fittings secured. Consider professional packing for fragile, valuable or unusually shaped goods.

Restricted and prohibited items

Do not pack flammable liquids, aerosols, gas cylinders, fireworks, weapons, perishable food or undeclared chemicals. Batteries, medicines, plants, alcohol, tobacco and food products can be restricted and may require specific documents or a different service.

Ask before packing anything that could be treated as dangerous goods. A carrier can refuse or remove undeclared items, and authorities may impose penalties or destroy prohibited goods.

Collection, customs and delivery

Provide the full collection postcode, access details and package count. At destination, state whether you need airport or depot collection, port delivery, or a separate delivery quotation. Local customs clearance, inspections, duties, storage and delivery should be identified in writing rather than assumed.

The named consignee must be available to provide documents and respond to the destination agent. Keep copies of passports, inventories, invoices and shipment references separate from the cargo.

Request a personal effects quote

Complete the form with the number, dimensions and weight of every packed piece. Tell us the preferred destination and whether timing or budget is the priority. We can then compare suitable air, shared-container and full-container arrangements, subject to current carrier acceptance.
