Less than Container Load, usually called LCL or groupage, allows several customers' consignments to share container space. It can suit boxed goods, palletised commercial cargo and personal effects that are too large for a parcel service but do not need a dedicated container. Rapid Logistics can review the volume, weight, packing and destination before requesting a current consolidation quotation.

Charges depend on the measured volume or weight, the route, depot handling, documentation and destination arrangements. There is no universal per-cubic-metre price. All LCL costs on this service are quote-only and must be checked for the actual cargo and current carrier service.

How an LCL shipment works

Cargo is normally delivered to or collected for a UK consolidation warehouse. Each consignment is checked against its documents before being combined with compatible cargo in a container. At destination, the container is moved to a deconsolidation depot, where individual shipments are separated for customs clearance and collection or delivery.

This process introduces more handling than a full container load. Strong export packing, clear labels and accurate paperwork are therefore essential. Sailing frequency and closing dates depend on the destination and consolidator; they are confirmed when a quotation and booking are prepared.

Cargo details to provide

List every package with its length, width, height and gross weight. Describe the goods clearly and state whether they can be stacked. Include the collection postcode, destination city or port, declared value and the name of the consignee. Photographs are useful when packing shape or handling is unusual.

Declare batteries, liquids, chemicals, food, timber, machinery containing oils, and any potentially dangerous goods. Some cargo cannot be consolidated with other shipments, and some destinations require permits or inspections before departure.

Packing for shared containers

Use rigid cartons, export cases or suitable pallets that can tolerate normal warehouse and terminal handling. Protect edges, fill empty spaces and secure the goods so they do not move inside the package. Each piece should carry a durable shipping mark that matches the packing list.

Personal effects should be inventoried in plain language rather than described only as “miscellaneous.” Commercial shipments normally need a detailed invoice and packing list. Timber crates and pallets may need an ISPM 15 treatment mark for the destination country.

LCL or a full container

LCL can be economical for a smaller consignment because the customer pays for part of the container and shared services. A full container load may become more practical as volume increases, where the cargo is fragile, or where reducing intermediate handling matters.

The comparison should include more than the ocean freight. Consider UK collection, warehouse receiving, origin charges, destination deconsolidation, customs clearance, storage and final delivery. We can help place these items side by side using current quotations rather than a headline rate that excludes essential charges.

Customs and destination arrangements

The consignee must be able to import the goods and complete destination formalities. Duties and taxes are determined by the authorities and are not included unless a quotation states otherwise. Delays can result if descriptions, values, tariff information or permits are incomplete.

Ask the destination agent what identification, authorisations and payment arrangements are required before shipping. See our customs and excise guidance for an overview of the documents to prepare.

Request an LCL groupage quote

Complete the quotation form with package-level dimensions and weights. Tell us whether collection, packing, customs support or destination delivery is needed. Rapid Logistics will review current consolidation options and explain which quoted charges apply; space and departure dates remain subject to carrier confirmation.
